Morafka Award | Annual Award | Best Student Paper | Annual Photo Contest

ANNUAL AWARD

Each year at the Annual Symposium, the Desert Tortoise Council presents its Annual Award to a person or organization having made a significant contribution to the preservation or knowledge of desert tortoises.

Selection of recipients for the annual award is made by the Awards Committee, composed of three members of the Council. (Bylaws Section 12).  The Awards Committee also make other special awards as they deem appropriate.

BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD

The Desert Tortoise Council Awards Committee present the Best Student Paper Award at the close of each Annual Symposium. A presenter must give notice to the Program Chair of his/her student status at the time the Abstract is received. The Best Student Paper Award notice will accompany the call for papers. To qualify as a student, the person must be enrolled at a college or university in a degree program. Student status must be affirmed by a note from the student's major professor or advisor and must accompany the Abstract. Award will be in the amount of $200 and will include a certificate.

The Award will be based on the following factors:

1. Value of content toward furthering knowledge of desert tortoise biology
2. Quality of content
3. Quality of oral presentation; and
4. Quality of visual presentation.

A minimum of three people, including the Student Award Chairperson, with a broad knowledge of desert tortoise biology and literature, will evaluate all student presentations. The Chairperson, with the assistance of the other evaluators will decide upon the winner and will make the award.

ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST

The Council sponsors the annual Photo Contest to honor and encourage  members to participate in educating the public through photography. 

Qualified winners will be awarded first, second, and third place ribbons in each of the 8 categories listed below. First Place awards will be $50; second and third place winners will receive ribbons. The Best of Show will receive $100.

1. WILD DESERT TORTOISES
2. CAPTIVE (PET) DESERT TORTOISES
3. OTHER DESERT REPTILES
4. DESERT MAMMALS
5. OTHER DESERT WILDLIFE
6. WILD DESERT PLANTS
7. DESERT SCENICS
8. TORTOISE CONSERVATION.

With the exception of Captive (Pet) Tortoises, all photos must be taken of wild (i.e. unrestrained and photographed in natural habitat) subjects occurring within the geographic range of the desert tortoise. Each contestant may submit a maximum of two prints per category. Photos must have been taken by the contestant.

Entry rules are posted on the Annual Symposium page. Submit electronic copies to the DTC webmaster prior to the Symposium to ensure that your entries are posted on the website.  Prints are judged at the Symposium by the attendees.

Prints will not be returned, except upon advance request, and will become the property of the Desert Tortoise Council. The Council shall have the right to use these photographs in its publications and educational programs, as well as to assign such permission to others, with full credit given to the photographer.
